Kaltio is the oldest independently published Finnish cultural magazine outside the Helsinki area. The magazine was founded in the spring of 1945, right at the end of the Lapland war, to write about cultural issues in the Northern Finland and to re-establish the value of the arts within the society. Around 1999, the magazine changed from black-and-white, mostly text-based journal into a visually interesting full colour publication it is still today. Six issues are published annually. Since 2008, cover of Kaltio has been dedicated to showcasing Northern Finnish artists.
